Study Note

Study Note

Peter urges believers to 'rejoice inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings, that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.' The concept of sharing (koinonia) in Christ's sufferings draws on Paul's identical language in Philippians 3:10 and 2 Corinthians 1:5, establishing suffering as a form of participation in Christ's own history. The eschatological reversal — present sharing of suffering becomes future sharing of revealed glory — mirrors Romans 8:17 ('if indeed we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him'). The 'exceeding joy' (chareis agalliomenoi) at the revelation of glory is the future telos that makes present participation in suffering not merely endurable but purposive.
