Study Note

Study Note

Jehu the seer rebukes Jehoshaphat for helping the wicked and loving those who hate God: 'therefore is wrath upon thee from before the Lord.' The rebuke challenges the view that political alliances with the ungodly are theologically neutral — Jehoshaphat's alliance with Ahab (2 Chronicles 18) earned a prophetic rebuke despite his personal piety. The principle embedded here — that association with the enemies of God incurs divine displeasure — runs through Psalm 1:1's beatitude ('blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked') and 2 Corinthians 6:14 ('do not be unequally yoked'). The subsequent praise for Jehoshaphat's reforms (19:3) shows that individual faithfulness and political compromise can coexist, but the compromise has its own divine consequence.
