Study Note
The record that 'in the days of Pekah king of Israel came Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, and took…and carried them captive to Assyria' documents the beginning of the Northern Kingdom's dissolution through Assyrian deportation policy — the historical event prophesied in Isaiah 9:1's 'afflicted… the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations.' The Assyrian practice of mass deportation and resettlement (mixing conquered populations to destroy ethnic-nationalist resistance) explains the later Samaritan mixed population and the Jewish contempt for Samaritans in the New Testament. Matthew 4:13-16 reads Isaiah 9:1 as fulfilled in Jesus' Galilean ministry — the region of Naphtali and Zebulun first darkened by Assyrian conquest becomes the first to see the great light of Christ. The verse participates in the Deuteronomistic History's theological interpretation of exile as the enacted Deuteronomy 28 curses for covenant infidelity.
