The Deuteronomistic summary of the northern kingdom's fall states plainly: 'the Lord removed Israel out of his sight, as he had said by all his servants the prophets. So was Israel carried away out of their own land to Assyria.' The phrase 'as he had said by all his servants the prophets' is a characteristic Deuteronomistic formula establishing that the 722 BCE Assyrian conquest was not historical accident but the fulfillment of prophetic warning. The removal 'out of his sight' echoes the garden expulsion (Genesis 3:24) and anticipates the Babylonian exile — exile is theologically the withdrawal of divine presence from a people who had withdrawn from divine loyalty. This hermeneutical principle — prophecy fulfilled in historical catastrophe — runs through the entirety of Old Testament historiography.
