Study Note

Paul's description of disciplining his body and keeping it under subjection — 'lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway' — applies athletic imagery (the boxing match, the training) to apostolic self-governance. The Greek 'hupōpiazō' (bruise under the eye, or wear down by continual pressure) vividly describes the sustained effort of self-mastery required to avoid hypocrisy. The possibility of Paul himself becoming 'adokimos' (disqualified, a castaway) has generated extensive debate: does this imply potential loss of salvation, or loss of apostolic reward and fruitfulness? Arminian and Calvinist interpreters have contested this verse intensely, the former emphasizing genuine perseverance risk, the latter stressing ministerial accountability without final apostasy.
