The condemnation of false teachers who have 'forsaken the right way and gone astray, following the way of Balaam' picks up the Balaam tradition of Numbers 22-24 as the paradigmatic example of prophetic ministry corrupted by mercenary motivation. In Numbers, Balaam cannot curse Israel because God prevents him, but Numbers 31:16 and Revelation 2:14 indicate that Balaam later taught Balak to corrupt Israel through idolatry and sexual immorality — a more insidious strategy than direct cursing. The characterization of the false teachers' motivation as 'wages of unrighteousness' (misthos adikias) identifies financial motivation as the underlying corruption of their ministry. Jude 11 includes Balaam in a triad of Old Testament negative examples (Cain, Balaam, Korah) used to characterize false teachers.
