'For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God' — Qohelet's otherwise relentlessly deconstructive wisdom pauses at a moment of relative affirmation: the gifts of wisdom, knowledge, and joy are divine allocations to those 'good before God,' not achievements of human accumulation. The ironic conclusion — that the sinner's toil ultimately enriches the righteous — anticipates the parable traditions of eschatological reversal and the Proverbs motif that the wealth of sinners is stored up for the righteous (Proverbs 13:22). The verse provides one of Ecclesiastes' rare positive theological orientations before returning to 'vanity' in chapter 3.
