Genesis 8:21

KJV

And the Lord smelled a sweet savour; and the Lord said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.

Study Note

After the flood, God's commitment — 'I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living' — is striking because it uses the same diagnosis as Genesis 6:5 (evil imagination) but draws the opposite conclusion: not judgment but grace. The paradox is intentional: the same human corruption that warranted the flood now becomes the reason God commits to restraining cosmic judgment — the logic is not that humans have improved but that God has chosen a path of patient forbearance. The 'sweet savour' (reyah nikoach) that moves God echoes later sacrificial terminology and anticipates Paul's use of the same phrase in Ephesians 5:2 ('Christ... a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savour'). Romans 2:4's 'the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance' and 2 Peter 3:9's 'the Lord is... longsuffering... not willing that any should perish' develop this theology of patient divine forbearance rooted in the Noahic covenant.
