Atonement

The reconciliation of God and humanity through the sacrificial offering that covers or removes sin. In the Old Testament, the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) was the annual sacrifice for Israel's sins. Christians understand Christ's death as the ultimate, once-for-all atonement.
