The assassination of Sennacherib 'as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god' by his own sons creates a pointed theological contrast with Hezekiah's prayer in the temple (37:14–20): the king who prays to YHWH survives; the king who worships a Nisroch-idol is killed in its very temple. The historical fulfillment of Isaiah's oracle (37:33–35: 'he shall not come into this city') in the sudden departure of the Assyrian army (37:36–37) is followed immediately by Sennacherib's domestic assassination, giving the narrative a double vindication. Herodotus (II.141) and Babylonian chronicles provide external corroboration for both the invasion and Sennacherib's subsequent violent death (681 BCE), making this one of the best archaeologically-attested events in the Hebrew Bible. The verse is important for the Bible's theology of idolatry's ultimate futility: the idol cannot protect even its own worshipper.
