Study Note

God's invitation — 'Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls' — is a prophetic call to covenantal recommitment framed in the metaphor of a traveller choosing routes. The 'old paths' (netivot olam) are the ancient ways of covenant faithfulness established with the patriarchs and at Sinai — the theological claim is that fidelity is not innovation but recovery of what was always the true orientation of Israel's existence. Jesus's promise in Matthew 11:29 — 'take my yoke upon you... and ye shall find rest unto your souls' — deliberately echoes this verse, presenting himself as the embodiment and fulfilment of the 'old paths.' The verse's juxtaposition of standing still (hithbonenu, examine carefully) and walking (leku, act) captures the prophetic synthesis of discernment and obedience.
