Study Note

Rahab's confession 'I know that the Lord hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you' represents the gentile outsider's recognition of divine sovereign purpose before its historical completion — an act of faith based on reports of past miracles (v. 10: the Red Sea crossing and the defeat of Sihon). Rahab's theological statement is remarkable for its source: a Canaanite woman in Jericho confesses YHWH's purpose while Israel's own spies are in need of hiding — a pointed contrast between gentile faith and uncertain Israelite confidence. Hebrews 11:31 includes Rahab in the faith-hall-of-fame ('by faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not'), and James 2:25 cites her as an example of faith made perfect through works. The scarlet thread (2:18-21) was read typologically by patristic exegetes as prefiguring the blood of Christ that marks the believer for salvation.
