Study Note

Jesus' declaration that the high priest will 'see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven' combines Psalm 110:1 and Daniel 7:13 — the two most cited Old Testament texts in early Christology. The exaltation Christology (sitting at the right hand of Power) places the condemned prisoner in the supreme position of cosmic authority, transforming the judicial scene from the perspective of divine reality. Caiaphas's charge of blasphemy (26:65) shows that this claim was understood not as metaphor but as the assertion of divine status, which in his view was presumptuous self-deification. The verse became central to early Christian preaching as evidence that Jesus himself predicted his exaltation and parousia before his death.
