Adah

Edom · H5711H
Old Testament

Adah, also known as Basemath, was one of Esau's Hittite wives and the mother of Eliphaz, who became a chief in the land of Edom.

Adah, also called Basemath, was a daughter of Elon the Hittite and one of Esau's wives, a marriage that 'made life bitter' for Isaac and Rebekah (Genesis 26:34–35; 36:2, 4). She was the mother of Eliphaz, Esau's firstborn, who in turn fathered the clans of Edom including Teman and Amalek. The multiple names for Esau's wives across Genesis reflect either variant traditions or personal name-changes at marriage. As an ancestor of the Edomite chiefs, Adah stands at the head of a genealogical line whose descendants would figure repeatedly in Israel's history.
