Old Testament

Ahikam, son of Shaphan, was an official during the reigns of Josiah and Jehoiakim, and he protected Jeremiah from death.

Ahikam son of Shaphan was a royal official who protected the prophet Jeremiah from death after Jeremiah's temple sermon provoked calls for his execution (Jeremiah 26:24). His father Shaphan had been the scribe who brought the Book of the Law to King Josiah (2 Kings 22:8–13), and Ahikam himself was part of the delegation sent to inquire of the prophetess Huldah. His son Gedaliah was appointed governor of Judah after Jerusalem fell to Babylon (2 Kings 25:22; Jeremiah 40:5). The Shaphan family consistently aligned itself with the prophetic tradition, providing a rare voice for covenant fidelity at the court of the later Judean kings.
