Anak

Exodus & Wilderness > · H6061
Old Testament

Anak was the ancestor of the Anakim, a race of giants who inhabited Canaan before the Israelite conquest.

Anak was the son of Arba—the 'greatest man among the Anakim' who gave his name to Kiriath-arba, later called Hebron—and the ancestor of the Anakim, a race of people of great stature who inhabited the hill country of Canaan (Joshua 15:13–14; Numbers 13:22, 28, 33). The report of the Israelite scouts that the Anakim made the spies 'seem like grasshoppers' was a major factor in Israel's failure of faith at Kadesh-barnea (Numbers 13:33). Caleb later drove out the three sons of Anak—Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai—from Hebron during the conquest (Joshua 15:14). Goliath and other Philistine giants may have been Anakim descendants who fled to the coast (2 Samuel 21:22).
