Archelaus

New Testament

Archelaus, son of Herod the Great, Ethnarch over Judea, causing Joseph to fear returning there with Mary and the child Jesus.

Archelaus was the son of Herod the Great who became ethnarch over Judea, Samaria, and Idumea after his father's death in 4 BC (Matthew 2:22). He was known for brutal and incompetent rule, and his subjects appealed to Rome against him; Augustus eventually deposed and exiled him in 6 AD. Matthew records that Joseph, warned in a dream, avoided Judea upon returning from Egypt because Archelaus was reigning there, and instead settled the family in Galilee under the jurisdiction of Herod Antipas. This detour to Galilee fulfilled the expectation that the Messiah would be called a Nazarene (Matthew 2:23), linking Jesus' childhood location to prophetic significance.
