Delilah

Old Testament

Delilah was a Philistine woman who deceived Samson into revealing the secret of his strength, leading to his capture.

Delilah was a woman from the valley of Sorek who was bribed by Philistine lords to discover the secret of Samson's strength. She persistently pestered Samson through three failed attempts before he revealed that his strength lay in his uncut hair as a Nazirite consecrated to God (Judges 16:4–17). She called a man to shave his head while he slept on her lap, and when his hair was cut his strength departed. The Philistines seized him, gouged out his eyes, and bound him to grind at the mill in Gaza (Judges 16:19–21). Delilah's identity—Israelite or Philistine—is not specified in the text, but she has become in Western culture one of the most iconic figures of seduction and betrayal. Samson's final act of strength came when his hair grew back in prison (Judges 16:28–30).
