Esau

Patriarchs (Abraham–Joseph) Edom · H6215G
Old Testament

Esau, also called Edom, was Isaac's firstborn son who sold his birthright to his twin brother Jacob and became the father of the Edomites.

Esau was the elder twin son of Isaac and Rebekah, and the brother of Jacob. His impulsive sale of his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of stew (Genesis 25:29–34) and the loss of his father's blessing to Jacob's deception (Genesis 27) mark him as a man who 'despised his birthright' (Genesis 25:34), a warning cited in Hebrews 12:16–17. Despite this, the adult Esau reconciles with Jacob with surprising generosity upon his brother's return to Canaan (Genesis 33). He is the eponymous ancestor of Edom, whose territory lay south and east of the Dead Sea, and Edom/Esau becomes in the prophets a symbol of nations that oppose God's people.
