Gomer

Patriarchs (Abraham–Joseph) Early Patriarch · H1586G
Old Testament

Gomer, a son of Japheth, was the father of Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah, as listed in the Table of Nations.

Gomer was a son of Japheth and grandson of Noah, recorded in Genesis 10:2–3, and is traditionally identified with the Cimmerians or other ancient peoples of the Black Sea region and Anatolia. He fathered Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah, whose names are associated with various peoples of Asia Minor and the northern steppes. The name Gomer appears also in Hosea 1:3 as the name of the prophet's wife, who became a symbol of Israel's unfaithfulness to God, though the two Gomers are unrelated.
