Old Testament

Haggith was one of King David's wives and the mother of Adonijah, who attempted to claim the throne.

Haggith was one of David's wives and the mother of Adonijah, David's fourth son born at Hebron (2 Samuel 3:4; 1 Kings 1:5). Adonijah attempted to seize the throne as David lay dying, and 1 Kings 1:6 notes David's failure to discipline him, describing him as 'very handsome.' When Adonijah's coup was thwarted by Nathan and Bathsheba and Solomon was crowned, Adonijah subsequently sought to marry Abishag through Bathsheba's intercession—a request Solomon interpreted as a continued claim on the throne and responded to by executing his brother.
