New Testament

Herodias was the wife of Herod Antipas, who had John the Baptist beheaded at her request.

Herodias was the granddaughter of Herod the Great who divorced her first husband (Herod Philip, her half-uncle) to marry Herod Antipas, another half-uncle. John the Baptist's public condemnation of this marriage as unlawful (Leviticus 18:16; 20:21) made her an enemy of John, though Antipas himself was fascinated by the prophet and protected him (Mark 6:19–20). Her opportunity for revenge came at Antipas's birthday banquet, where her daughter's dance so pleased him that he offered anything she wished. Prompted by Herodias, the daughter requested John's head on a platter (Mark 6:21–28; Matthew 14:6–11). Herodias was later exiled with Antipas to Gaul by Caligula. Josephus names her daughter as Salome.
