Onam was a descendant of Judah, the son of Jerahmeel, and had two sons, Shammai and Jada.
Onam was a son of Jerahmeel and his wife Atarah and the father of Shammai and Jada, belonging to the Jerahmeelite branch of the tribe of Judah (1 Chronicles 2:26–28). He was one of five sons of Jerahmeel's primary wife, representing the complex kinship structure of the Judahite clans in the Negev region. A separate Onam appears among the Horite chiefs of Seir (Genesis 36:23), making the name ethnically diverse in the biblical record.
