Pekahiah

Divided Kingdom Israel · H6494
Old Testament

Pekahiah, son of Menahem, king of Israel who reigned for 2 years before being assassinated.

Pekahiah was the seventeenth king of the northern kingdom of Israel, son of Menahem, who reigned only two years around 742–740 BC. He continued the religious policies of Jeroboam and did not depart from the golden calves. He was assassinated by his military commander Pekah son of Remaliah, who had the support of fifty Gileadites and killed him in the palace at Samaria (2 Kings 15:23–26). The brevity and violent end of Pekahiah's reign reflects the political chaos that had engulfed the northern kingdom since the death of Jeroboam II. His assassination opened the door to the pro-Aramean policy of Pekah, which would ultimately draw Assyrian wrath and hasten the kingdom's end.
