New Testament

Zacchaeus, a wealthy tax collector, hosted Jesus in his home and experienced a transformative encounter.

Zacchaeus was a chief tax collector in Jericho who, being of small stature, climbed a sycamore tree to see Jesus as he passed through the city (Luke 19:1–10). Jesus called him down and announced he would stay at Zacchaeus's house, prompting the crowd's complaint that he was dining with a sinner. In response to Jesus's welcome, Zacchaeus pledged to give half his possessions to the poor and to repay fourfold anyone he had defrauded, prompting Jesus's declaration that 'salvation has come to this house today.'
