Zanoah

Old Testament

Zanoah, a town in the Judean lowlands allotted to Judah, whose inhabitants helped rebuild the Valley Gate during Nehemiah's time (Josh. 15:34; 1 Chr. 4:18; Neh. 3:13; 11:30).

Zanoah was a town in the Judean lowlands allotted to the tribe of Judah, listed in the boundary descriptions of Joshua 15:34. In the Judahite genealogy, Jekuthiel is described as the 'father' (founder) of Zanoah (1 Chronicles 4:18). During Nehemiah's restoration, the inhabitants of Zanoah repaired the Valley Gate, its doors, and five hundred cubits of wall (Nehemiah 3:13; 11:30). The town thus figures in both the tribal settlement and the post-exilic resettlement of the Judean heartland.
