Study Note

Paul's diagnosis of Gentile idolatry — 'although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened' — identifies suppression of the knowledge of God as the root of moral and intellectual corruption. The knowledge in question is not the full gospel but the natural knowledge of God available through creation (verse 20), which Psalm 19:1 and Wisdom 13:1-9 also affirm. The sequence failure (honor God) → futility (thinking) → darkness (heart) → idolatry → sexual immorality presents a comprehensive moral psychology of rebellion and its consequences. The three 'God gave them up' statements (verses 24, 26, 28) indicate that divine judgment operates through the removal of restraint, allowing sin to produce its own consequences.
