Study Note

Paul's doxological description of Christ as 'over all, God blessed for ever' (ho ōn epi pantōn theos eulogētos eis tous aiōnas) is one of the New Testament's most direct ascriptions of the title 'God' to Jesus, though punctuation disputes make it textually contested. The majority of modern scholarship reads it as applying 'God blessed for ever' to Christ, making it a significant high-Christology text within Paul's letters. The verse comes in the midst of Paul's anguish over Israel's unbelief, giving the doxology a painfully ironic context: the one whom Israel has rejected is none other than the God of Israel. The passage thus holds together Jewish Christian grief and high Christology in a way that resists both supersessionism and low Christology.
