Study Note

Daniel's prophecy that 'many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt' is one of only two explicit OT references to bodily resurrection and final judgment (the other being Isaiah 26:19). The context of chapters 11-12 is the Antiochene persecution (c. 167 BCE) — the resurrection promise directly addresses those martyred for their faith, offering eschatological vindication when earthly justice has completely failed. Jesus cites a near-paraphrase in John 5:28-29 ('all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation'), making Daniel 12:2 the OT ground for his resurrection teaching. Acts 24:15's 'hope toward God... that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust' is Paul's formulation of the same tradition.
