Study Note

The mutual indwelling of believers and God is confirmed by two criteria: keeping his commandments and 'the Spirit which he hath given us.' This verse pairs obedience and Spirit as co-witnesses to genuine fellowship with God, anticipating John 14:23 ('if anyone loves me he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come and make our home with him'). The Spirit-gift as a mark of divine presence reflects Paul's similar argument in Romans 8:16 ('the Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God'). The verse closes 1 John 3's great section on love and marks a transition to 4:1-6's concern with discerning the Spirit — the same Spirit that gives assurance must also be tested.
