Study Note

Paul's reminder that 'the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night' draws on a metaphor also used in Matthew 24:43 and Revelation 16:15 to capture the combination of inevitability and unexpectedness that characterises eschatological expectation. The 'day of the Lord' (hēmera kyriou) is the OT prophetic concept (Joel 2:1; Amos 5:18-20; Zephaniah 1:14) of God's decisive intervention in history, now centred christologically in the parousia. The contrast with verse 4 ('but ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief') suggests that eschatological readiness is not a matter of predicting the date but of living in the light that transforms surprise into welcome. 2 Peter 3:10 extends the metaphor into cosmic scope — the heavens passing away 'with a great noise' — using thief-suddenness to motivate holy living in the present.
