Study Note

'But I received mercy for this reason: that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life' — Paul's self-identification as 'the foremost of sinners' in this verse serves a prototypical function: his conversion becomes the paradigm case for the scope of divine mercy. The word 'hypotypōsin' (pattern/example) is technical — Paul presents himself as a display piece demonstrating the outer limit of Christ's patient saving work. The doxology that follows ('to the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever,' verse 17) grounds this autobiographical theology in a burst of worshipful praise. This verse has been central in evangelical discussions of grace as scandalously inclusive — if Paul can be saved, none is beyond mercy's reach.
