Study Note

'I know whom I have believed, and I am persuaded that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me' — Paul's personal confession in the context of suffering and abandonment (verses 8–11, 15) grounds confidence not in circumstances but in the reliability of the known Person. The phrase 'I know whom' (oida hō) privileges relational knowledge over propositional certainty: the ground of assurance is the character of the one trusted, not the certainty of one's own faith. The 'deposit' (parathēkē) may refer to either the gospel Paul has been commissioned to guard (see 2 Timothy 1:14; 2:2) or his own life placed in God's keeping — both readings are grammatically possible. The verse is a summary of Pauline eschatological confidence: the certainty of final preservation rests on the character of God, not the strength of the believer's grip.
