Study Note
'Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all' — the catalogue of abolished distinctions in the new humanity surpasses even Galatians 3:28 in breadth, adding the ethnic extremes of 'barbarian' and 'Scythian' (the most uncivilized peoples in ancient estimation). The phrase 'Christ is all and in all' (ta panta kai en pasin Christos) is the densest christological affirmation in the context of social ethics: the abolition of human hierarchies is grounded in Christ's comprehensive sufficiency and universal indwelling. The passage follows immediately from the 'put off / put on' baptismal metaphor (3:9–10) and the 'new humanity' (neon anthrōpon) that is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its Creator. This verse has been a foundational text for anti-slavery and anti-racist theologies throughout church history.
