Study Note

The beginning of the 'curses section' of the Mosaic covenant (verses 15-68) presents the terrifying counterpart to the blessings of verses 1-14. The curses are structured as the precise reversal of the blessings: the same spheres of life (city, field, body, land, military, weather) that would flourish under obedience will fail under disobedience. The historical fulfillment of these curses in the Assyrian (722 BCE) and Babylonian (587 BCE) exiles gave the passage enormous hermeneutical weight in post-exilic Jewish interpretation. Paul alludes to the Deuteronomic curse in Galatians 3:10-13, arguing that Christ has redeemed believers from 'the curse of the law' by becoming a curse for them.
