Study Note
The declaration 'for it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God' is the locus classicus for the Protestant doctrine of salvation by grace alone through faith alone. The grammar of 'this is the gift of God' is debated: does 'this' refer to grace, faith, or the whole complex of being saved? Verse 9 adds 'not by works, so that no one can boast,' completing the exclusion of all human contribution to the initiating act of salvation. Luther's rediscovery of this principle (sola gratia, sola fide) through Paul's letters was the theological engine of the Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth century.
