Study Note

Often called the Protoevangelium ('first gospel'), this verse records God's curse on the serpent and introduces an enduring enmity between the serpent's offspring and the woman's. The Hebrew 'shuph' (strike/crush) is used for both subjects, conveying a mutually wounding but asymmetric conflict. Christian interpreters from the second century onward read the verse as a messianic prophecy anticipating Christ's defeat of Satan, while Jewish exegesis understands it as describing the perennial human struggle against evil. The verse marks the narrative turn from an innocent creation to a broken one, setting the arc for the rest of the biblical story.
