Study Note
The logic of the Incarnation in Hebrews 2 requires genuine human nature: 'since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil.' The victory over death is achieved not by circumventing death but by entering it — only a genuine human being can die, and only through death could the power of death be broken. The term 'destroy' (katargēsē — render inoperative, neutralize) does not imply the devil's annihilation but the breaking of his death-holding power over those who believe. 1 Corinthians 15:26, 54-55 and Revelation 20:14 describe the ultimate abolition of death as the eschatological completion of what is here inaugurated through the cross.
