Study Note

'You shall winnow them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the tempest shall scatter them. And you shall rejoice in the LORD; in the Holy One of Israel you shall glory' — the salvation oracle to 'Jacob my servant' (41:8) culminates in a reversal: the oppressors become chaff while the threshing floor becomes Israel's rejoicing. The imagery of wind and tempest scattering enemies recalls the Song of the Sea (Exodus 15) and Psalm 1:4, embedding the oracle in the tradition of YHWH's warrior-wind defeating Israel's enemies. The closing doxology — 'rejoice in the LORD' and 'glory in the Holy One of Israel' — translates military victory into worship, showing that salvation is always, for Isaiah, an occasion for praise rather than merely political relief. The title 'Holy One of Israel' (Qedosh Yisrael), appearing twenty-five times in Isaiah, is the book's characteristic divine epithet, rooting all saving activity in the divine holiness encountered in Isaiah 6.
