Isaiah offers Ahaz a sign: 'a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.' The Hebrew 'almah' (young woman of marriageable age) was rendered 'parthenos' (virgin) in the Septuagint, and Matthew 1:23 cites this version as fulfilled in Jesus's birth. The near-term fulfillment in Isaiah's own time (a child born before the Syro-Ephraimite threat passes) and the ultimate fulfillment in Christ represent the typological hermeneutic characteristic of New Testament use of Old Testament prophecy. The verse remains one of the most discussed in the entire Old Testament, sitting at the intersection of textual, historical, and christological scholarship.
