If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

Study Note
The promise 'if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him' establishes prayer for wisdom as the primary response to the trials of verse 2-4. The characterization of God as giving 'generously' (haplōs — singly, simply, without complexity or reservation) and 'without reproach' (mē oneidizontos — not shaming the asker for repeated requests or ignorance) addresses the anxiety that prayer for wisdom might be unwelcome or ineffective. The verse draws on the wisdom tradition of Proverbs 2:3-6 and Sirach 51:13-22, where wisdom is sought through prayer and given by God, and anticipates the request-with-faith condition of verse 6. Solomon's prayer for wisdom (1 Kings 3:9-12) is the paradigmatic example that James's readers would have known.
