Study Note
The announcement 'Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah' is the single most significant Old Testament reference to a new covenant, and is the longest single Old Testament quotation in the New Testament (Hebrews 8:8–12). The newness of the covenant is not a replacement of YHWH but a different mode of administration — 'not according to the covenant I made with their fathers' (v. 32) — specifically, the internalization of Torah (v. 33: 'I will put my law in their inward parts and write it on their hearts'). Jesus' words over the cup ('this is my blood of the new covenant,' Matthew 26:28; 1 Corinthians 11:25) identify his death as the covenant-inaugurating sacrifice, making Jeremiah 31:31 the explicit prophetic ground for the Christian theology of the Lord's Supper. The verse is indispensable for understanding the biblical theology of covenant continuity and discontinuity.
