Study Note

Zechariah's Benedictus declares that God's purpose is 'that we, being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life' — presenting the goal of salvation not as individual soul-rescue but as liberated covenant service. The language echoes the Exodus liberation formula throughout: deliverance from enemies, priestly service, holiness — Zechariah reads the birth of John as the beginning of a new exodus. The phrase 'without fear' (aphobōs) implies that prior covenant service was distorted by the anxiety of unfulfilled promises and the oppressive presence of foreign domination. The Benedictus as a whole has been incorporated into the Christian Daily Office (Lauds) since the earliest lectionaries, and this verse has shaped the liturgical theology of morning prayer as freed, joyful service.
