Study Note

'Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?' — the eschatological judgment scene presents the most alarming scenario in the Sermon on the Mount: people who performed extraordinary religious feats in Christ's name are refused entry by Christ himself. The criterion of rejection — 'I never knew you' (verse 23) — makes relational knowing rather than religious performance the decisive eschatological category. The verse has generated sustained theological reflection on the nature of saving faith versus mere religious activity, and on the possibility that spiritual power can be exercised without genuine covenantal relationship with Christ.
