a wife of Ezekiel

Old Testament

Ezekiel's wife died suddenly, and God used her death as a sign to the people of Israel.

Ezekiel's wife, unnamed in the biblical text, died suddenly in the evening during the prophet's ministry in Babylon, and God forbade Ezekiel from mourning her publicly — describing her as 'the delight of your eyes' (Ezekiel 24:16–18). Her death became a prophetic sign to the exiles of Israel concerning the destruction of the temple, which God likewise described as the delight of the people's eyes. Ezekiel's silent obedience to the command not to weep for her demonstrated the overwhelming grief that would render the exiles speechless at Judah's catastrophe.
