Abinoam

Old Testament

Abinoam was the father of Barak, the Israelite commander who, along with the prophetess Deborah, led the Israelites to victory against the Canaanite army led by Sisera.

Abinoam was the father of Barak of Kedesh-naphtali, the military commander summoned by the prophetess Deborah to lead Israel's forces against the Canaanite army of Sisera (Judges 4:6, 12; 5:1, 12). The Song of Deborah and Barak, one of the oldest Hebrew poems in Scripture, celebrates the victory at the waters of Megiddo, repeatedly mentioning 'Barak son of Abinoam.' Nothing is known of Abinoam himself; he is remembered entirely through his son's decisive role in delivering Israel from Canaanite oppression.
