Old Testament

Hanun, the Ammonite king, mistreated David's envoys, leading to a war between the Ammonites and Israel.

Hanun was king of the Ammonites who succeeded his father Nahash, with whom David had maintained a treaty of friendship (2 Samuel 10:1–2; 1 Chronicles 19:1–2). When David sent a delegation of condolence after Nahash's death, Hanun's advisers convinced him the envoys were spies, and he humiliated them by shaving off half their beards and cutting their garments to the waist. This insult provoked a major war in which Joab and Abishai defeated a combined Ammonite-Aramean force, and David later captured the Ammonite capital Rabbah and subjected the Ammonites to forced labor.
