Hophni

Old Testament

Hophni, along with his brother Phinehas, was a corrupt priest who served under his father Eli at the tabernacle in Shiloh.

Hophni was a son of Eli the priest and served alongside his brother Phinehas at the tabernacle in Shiloh during the period of the judges. He and Phinehas are condemned in 1 Samuel 2:12–17 as 'worthless men' who treated the offering of the Lord with contempt, taking sacrificial meat by force and engaging in sexual immorality with women who served at the tent of meeting. God announced through a man of God and through the young Samuel that the house of Eli would be cut off from the priesthood. Both Hophni and Phinehas died on the same day when the Philistines captured the ark of the covenant (1 Samuel 4:11), fulfilling the divine judgment.
