Old Testament

A huge man from Gath, possibly a descendant of the Rephaim, was killed by David's warriors during a battle with the Philistines.

The 'huge man' from Gath is described as a warrior of extraordinary stature, a descendant of the Rephaim, who carried a spear with a shaft like a weaver's beam and wore bronze armor (2 Samuel 21:20–21; 1 Chronicles 20:6–7). He had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot — twenty-four digits in all — and taunted Israel in battle. Jonathan son of Shimea (David's brother) killed him in a single combat that echoes the narrative pattern of David's victory over Goliath, and his death is listed among the four Philistine giant-warriors slain by David's champions.
