Old Testament

Jakeh was the father of Agur, the author of Proverbs 30.

Jakeh was the father of Agur, the sage who composed the sayings recorded in Proverbs 30. Agur's words are introduced as 'the oracle of Agur son of Jakeh,' suggesting a wisdom tradition associated with this family. The identity and geographical origin of both Jakeh and Agur are disputed; some scholars have suggested an Arabian origin for the name Massa, mentioned in the same verse as either a place name or a description. Jakeh is thus the patriarch of one of the few non-Israelite wisdom contributions preserved in the canonical book of Proverbs.
